March 22, 2001 THE GREAT OKANAGAN WOODSTOVE EXCHANGE PROGRAM IS SMOKIN' Wood stove sales throughout the Okanagan Valley have been brisk thanks in part to the Great Okanagan Wood Stove Exchange Program that began February 19, 2001. During the first month of the program 76 uncertified wood stoves have been exchanged for more efficient and approved clean burning appliances. The unprecedented success of the exchange program has caught the attention of the Federal Government and the BC Lung Association regarding the possibility of a province wide exchange program next year. The exchange program offers rebates to homeowners who replace uncertified wood stoves with more efficient and approved clean burning appliances. Participating wood stove dealers are offering trade-in allowances of 15%, which results in a rebate of up to $500 or more for old stoves when customers are purchasing new energy-efficient models. Wood, pellet, gas and electric models are all eligible. The old stoves are recycled, not resold. The program is limited; rebates are available until March 31st. The exchange is a partnership between Okanagan Valley health and government organizations, wood stove suppliers, installers and manufacturers. The goal is to reduce wood smoke pollution through raising public awareness of the importance of smoke-free burning. Old smoky wood stoves contribute to the health problems of many Central Okanagan residents each year. The new certified stoves burn 1/3 less wood and reduce smoke and particulates by up to 90% compared to the old style stoves. -30- Media Contacts: For More Information |
